The Digital Entrepreneur

It’s the 2nd of April 2026 and after a quite sleepless night I have decided to get my website in order. Like many people, I have multiple skills from more than 40 years of living and working. Skills that perform incredibly well in customer services and tech, however, for me, the job market seems to take a different view.

Today’s job market is a different animal when compared with the one I grew up with. Gone are the days of being able to walk into an establishment , maybe complete an application form using a pen and following an interview lasting less than 30 minutes, a trial run at the job.

Fast forward to 2026 and virtually everything is applied for online. You will either be working 40+ hours a week or part time. Then you have very congested roads, roadworks, cameras springing up everywhere, expensive parking and public transport that isn’t always running when you need it.

Well, I’m often late to the party (so to speak), a manager at BT once told me that I had ‘imposter syndrome’, something I had never considered but it made sense the moment I realised it.

I left school at 16, dropped out of catering college before returning to college around my 21st and trained as a mechanic. Worked in the motor trade for around two years here and there, most places I enquired either wanted an MOT tester or YTS (Youth Training Scheme). I had City and Guilds 383.

Since then I have worked in call centres, supermarkets, a bakery, a filling station, driven taxis and been in the computer repair industry for 20 years. Apart from my mechanics qualification and a failed attempt to change career at age 50 by doing a degree in Environmental Science, everything else is self taught.

“So, what’s this ‘digital entrepreneur’ stuff all about then?” “Well, thanks for asking.” It seems to me, if you can’t beat them – join them! I am passionate about walking, short hikes and camping plus I’m a bit of an EDC (every day carry) nerd. I’m also brilliant at setting up new computer systems and transferring programs and data. It is these topics I am using to become a digital entrepreneur. Watch this space.
